Blood culture-negative endocarditis

Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) may represent up to 70% of all endocarditis cases, depending on series. From 2001 to 2009, we implemented in our laboratory a multimodal diagnostic strategy for BCNE that included systematized testing of blood, and when available, valvular biopsy specimens using serological, broad range molecular, and histopathological assays. A causative microorganism...

High frequency of Tropheryma whipplei in culture-negative endocarditis.

"Classical" Whipple's disease (cWD) is caused by Tropheryma whipplei and is characterized by arthropathy, weight loss, and diarrhea. T. whipplei infectious endocarditis (TWIE) is rarely reported, either in the context of cWD or as isolated TWIE without signs of systemic infection. The frequency of TWIE is unknown, and systematic studies are lacking. Here, we performed an observational cohort st...

Blood Culture–Negative Endocarditis, Morocco

We investigated the microorganisms causing blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) in Morocco. We tested 19 patients with BCNE by serologic methods, molecular methods, or both and identified Bartonella quintana, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus equi, and Streptococcus oralis in 4 patients. These results highlight the role of these zoonotic agents in BCNE in Morocco.

Brucella endocarditis.

Brucella endocarditis is an underdiagnosed, fatal complication of human brucellosis. Four successfully treated cases of Brucella endocarditis are reported. The development of a new valvar lesion and bulky vegetations seen on echocardiography helped to identify Brucella endocarditis occurring during systemic brucellosis. The aortic valve was affected in all four patients, and in one the mitral v...
